We’re more than just vets – Celebrating World Veterinary Day

We’re more than just vets!

The health and wellbeing of people, animals and the environment are inextricably linked. At VetPartners, we know that everything we do has an impact on the world around us – from the care we provide to the choices we make every day. That’s why we’re committed to making a positive difference for our patients, our people and the planet.

To mark World Veterinary Day on Saturday 25th April, here’s how we’re putting that into action….

Tackling antimicrobial resistance through responsible antibiotic stewardship — a global issue for both animal and human health

VetPartners has significantly reduced antibiotic usage across its UK practices by more than 60% since 2021. Through strict stewardship, we’re focusing on responsible prescribing, decreasing the use of critically important antibiotics by 33% in 2025 compared to 2024 to combat antimicrobial resistance.

we are making good progress in our aim to reduce, refine and, where possible, replace antibiotics across the UK and Europe. The Quality Improvement (QI) approach to antibiotics stewardship in practice enables us to review our use and take responsibility for our role in the action against antimicrobial resistance.

Reducing our environmental impact

We’ve taken a lead in recycling by rolling out TerraCycle Zero Waste Boxes across practices, recycling ‘unrecyclables’ such as PPE, plastic packaging and medication blister packs. Since 2020 we’ve saved more than 32 tonnes of waste from incineration or landfill through this initiative.

VetPartners has also committed to ambitious climate targets, with a 2045 Net Zero target accredited by the Science-Based Targets Initiative. We’ve started reducing our emissions by switching to renewable electricity and improving our energy efficiency. Our Net Zero strategy includes a range of measures over the next 20 years, including tackling emissions from volatile anaesthetic gases and building sustainability into our travel policies.

Many of our practices have earned  Investors in the Environment (iiE)  or RCVS PSS Environmental Sustainability awards, and we’ve been recognised by the iiE annual awards scheme for our social impact.

Protecting communities by helping vaccinate 5,000 dogs against rabies

VetPartners and MSD Animal Health have joined forces to help protect both communities and animals in Malawi through a major rabies vaccination programme.

Together, we are taking on the ambitious challenge of vaccinating more than 5,000 dogs in Malawi with Mission Rabies, helping to reduce the spread of this deadly but preventable disease.

Vets and veterinary nurses from across VetPartners practices in the UK and Europe have stepped forward to take part in this fully funded charitable initiative, demonstrating their commitment to global animal health and welfare.

This summer, volunteers will take part in four days of dedicated rabies vaccination clinics, working on the ground to support efforts towards the elimination of rabies.

Prioritising the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of our teams so they can deliver the best possible care

VetPartners has pioneered a bespoke mental health training initiative for team members designed specifically for the veterinary profession. Developed in-house, the programme reflects the unique psychological, emotional and workplace pressures experienced by veterinary teams and provides practical, relevant support aligned to real clinical environments.

This initiative is an industry first within the veterinary sector.

VetPartners also supports female colleagues at all stages of their lives. VetPartners is committed to supporting women with endometriosis – a debilitating condition affecting 1.5million of the UK’s women – and has developed an Endometriosis Policy in collaboration with colleagues who live with the condition.

We also support women experiencing the menopause with resources, policies and toolkits to help those experiencing symptoms.

Our cash-back health plan offers valuable support and reassurance for colleagues.

Opening up the profession through university grants, creating opportunities for people from diverse communities to make a real difference

VetPartners is helping to create a more diverse profession by removing financial barriers for students studying veterinary medicine.

Through our bursary scheme, we support students who already have a university place but would struggle to support their studies without additional assistance.

We want to encourage and support under-represented groups to view the veterinary profession as something that’s not only aspirational, but also attainable.

The total value of the bursary is £7,500, and we offer up to 15 new bursaries each autumn.

We’re encouraging people from diverse backgrounds into the farm vet profession

VetPartners, which has more than 70 farm or mixed practices, is busting the myth that farm vets must come from a farming background and that farm vetting is only for men.

Through reaching out to veterinary students at university, we are encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those without farming roots, to pursue farm vet careers.

We’re also actively breaking the male-dominated stereotype of the farm vet sector, supporting women to thrive as farm vets and creating a more diverse, welcoming workplace.

Through initiatives like the VetPartners Farm Academy and our Farm New Graduate Programme, students and new graduates receive training to gain confidence in dairy, sheep and large animal roles.

We’re also changing perceptions that being a farm vet is purely a “muddy boots” job. The reality is that modern farm vet roles involve utilising data-driven systems, focusing on sustainable and regenerative farming and collaborating with specialists.
