Pets in County Durham set to benefit from new rehabilitation facilities

PET owners in County Durham can now access specialist physiotherapy and hydrotherapy services for their dogs and cats at Wilson Vets in Bishop Auckland, following the launch of a dedicated new rehabilitation service designed to support recovery, mobility and long-term wellbeing.

The new service at the Tenters Street practice brings physiotherapy and hydrotherapy together under one roof, providing a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation and preventative healthcare for the region’s pets.

Led by a dedicated physiotherapist who holds a degree in animal physiotherapy and further qualifications in hydrotherapy and laser, the facilities support pets recovering from orthopaedic surgery, soft tissue injuries and neurological conditions.  It also provides treatment for older pets living with arthritis, as well as those needing support with weight management and fitness.

Hydrotherapy uses warm water and low-impact exercise to help pets build strength, improve mobility and regain confidence while reducing strain on painful joints and muscles.

The launch means local pet owners no longer need to travel long distances to access specialist rehabilitation services, with tailored treatment plans now available as part of their pet’s ongoing veterinary care.

Claire Bake, Practice Manager at Wilson Vets, said:  “The combination of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy can be life-changing for some pets. From helping dogs walk confidently again after surgery to supporting weight loss and improving mobility in older pets, these services are about giving animals the best possible quality of life.

“By offering both physiotherapy and hydrotherapy under one roof, we can provide a truly joined-up approach to care. Every pet is different, so we create tailored rehabilitation programmes to suit their individual needs, helping them recover, regain confidence and enjoy a more active, comfortable life.”

While rehabilitation is often associated with injury recovery, the service is also available to healthy pets looking to improve fitness, maintain mobility and support their long-term wellbeing.

The new facility reflects the growing role that physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are playing in modern veterinary medicine, helping pets live healthier, happier and more active lives.
