Clinical Board team hits the road for discussion, updates and fun

COLLEAGUES from across VetPartners’ Scottish practices came together for clinical discussions on key topics, along with some fun and laughter, at the first Clinical Board Roadshow of the year.

Our Clinical Board team is hitting the road to meet our practice colleagues with events around the UK, spreading the word on how we support colleagues to develop each other and the care they deliver.

Small animal, equine and farm vets, receptionists and veterinary nurses from Parkside Vets, Abbey Vets, Dunedin Vets, Galedin Vets and Clyde Vets attended the first event on Monday night at Clyde Vets in Lanark.

Hosted by VetPartners Director of Clinical Research and Excellence in Practice Rachel Dean, the event was hailed a big success.

As well as Rachel, Clinical Board Support team members Caroline Scobie and Kathryn Wareham attended, along with Susan Farr (Abbey Vets) from our Small Animal Clinical Board, Shannon Stewart (Parkside Vets) from our Equine Clinical Board and Alistair Crozier (Parkside Vets) from our Farm Animal Clinical Board.

Colleagues received an update on work currently being carried out by the Clinical Board and heard how getting involved can benefit colleagues, their team, their practice and the animals they treat.

Among the topics discussed were Quality Improvement work, the responsible use of antibiotics and parasiticides in equines and the complications and management of equine castration; Librela, Brachycephalics, Otitis externa and hypertension in cats, and, in farm animals, FerAppease, NSAIDs and vaginal prolapse in ewes.

Rachel, pictured here with Dunedin Vets Clinical Director Margot Hunter, said: “We’ve been doing roadshows for six years and it felt great to be back on the road. We bring people from across VetPartners practices together to talk about clinical stuff, topics of interest, Quality Improvement work, clinical research and ways we can improve practice together.

“One of the great things is when people walk into the room and start to make connections with people from other practices.”

Colleagues then broke into species groups to explore real, topical clinical challenges, as well as a chance to share ideas, reflect on current approaches, and help to shape the support they need.

Abbey Vets Clinical Director Susan Farr, who is part of the VetPartners Small Animal Clinical Board, said: “The Clinical Board roadshows are one of our ways of getting direct feedback from everyone at practice level to help us as a board find out if the information and resources that we are providing are relevant, in a format that people find useful and are quick and easy to find.

“Meetings like the Scottish roadshow not only give us the chance to have those small group conversations to find out what people like and don’t like but also gives everyone there the chance to meet with and speak to people from other practices and share experiences both clinical and non-clinical. If by the end of the evening, everyone leaves with one or two new ideas from those conversations, we’ve achieved our purpose.”

Clyde Vets Equine Clinical Director Jamie Christie said: “It is great to see so many vets, veterinary nurses and support colleagues from so many different practices.

“It brings practices, species groups and people from different roles together. People have different perspectives to share, and everyone’s opinion is heard which is really good.”

Alistair Crozier, Clinical Director at Parkside Vets in Dundee and helps to lead out Farm Animal Clinical Board, said: “It’s always good to meet people from different practices and hear about different experiences and different ways of doing things.

“Rachel is a very engaging speaker and what she talked about with the Quality Improvement work and cow caesareans was very illuminating. It was also interesting to hear about the work being down on the complications and management of equine castration.”
