We have an exciting opportunity for a Head Nurse to join our experienced and friendly team. Responsible for setting the clinical nursing standards and to ensure implementation of these standards. Support nursing staff whilst working within the clinical capacity in line with practice standards and protocols and always working within the guidelines of the veterinary surgeons act. To manage and lead the nursing team in all aspects.
This is a full-time permanent position – 40 hours per week, including some OOH, where you’ll be working 1:6 weekends.
Competitive salary of £35,000.
Job requirements/responsibilities:
- Provide gold standard nursing care to sick and injured patients, including monitoring, feeding and grooming, and keep all records up to date
- Administrating treatments including injections and tablets
- Perform diagnostic tests, e.g. Blood sampling, urine analysis and x-rays
- Prepare animals for surgery
- Assist veterinary surgeons with operations
- Hiring of new nursing staff
- Training new staff
- Creating Rotas for nursing staff
- Placing orders for equipment and supplies
- Handling and restraining animals in a safe and controlled way
- Maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the practice.
- Deal with client queries and complaints
- Ensure student nurses are allocated sufficient time with their clinical coach for ongoing training
- Ensure good communication between all departments
- Conduct regular one to ones and annual appraisals
- Conduct return to work interviews
- Demonstrate an understanding of staff motivation, teamwork, different learning styles and different methods of assessing an employee’s performance
- Ensure the nursing team and veterinary care assistants work in a manner consistent to RCVS practice standards at all times in clinical areas
- Manage overtime and TOIL for the nurse team
- Manage day to day issues relating to performance, absence, grievance or disputes that may arise in area of responsibility
- Responsible for student placements and college inspections
- Assist in recruitment of staff in area of responsibility including input to job descriptions, shortlisting, interviewing, induction and probationary reviews
- Delegating nursing tasks ensuring team members are capable of undertaking
- Review and update clinical area protocols when appropriate
- Undertake CPD as required
- Any other duties and responsibilities appropriate to the nurse manager role
Skills/Qualifications:
- Veterinary experience and leadership skills
- Ability to communicate confidently with people at all levels
- Able to prioritise work based on deadlines and importance
- Attention to detail in all aspects of role – consistently produces work to the highest standard
