Summer driving campaign to keep colleagues safe on the roads

VETPARTNERS has launched a Drive Safely campaign to encourage colleagues to take extra care on busy roads this summer.

Summer is a time when there are more vehicles, especially cars and tractors, on our roads than at any other time of year, with tourists visiting the UK, British holidaymakers staying at home, motorcyclists and agricultural machinery causing heavier traffic and potential delays.

There are also more cyclists on the road over the summer, while rail strikes may force more people to drive instead of taking public transport.

According to the Government’s latest available figures, there were 27,966 accidents over the summer, June to August, in 2021.

VetPartners is running the campaign to highlight the dangers of busy roads and is urging colleagues to drive safely and stay focused, whether travelling as part of their role or on personal journeys.

VetPartners CEO Jo Malone said: “Statistics show there are more accidents in the summer, and we want to look after our colleagues and help them to stay safe on the road. While we can’t eliminate accidents, we can support colleagues to keep themselves safe.”

VetPartners Head of Health and Safety Andy Holmes has provided six top tips to help keep everyone safe on the road this summer.

  1. Keep a safe distance – Give enough time to respond and brake in an emergency.
  2. Stay focused – Concentrate on driving and beware of distractions (eg phone calls).
  3. Take care – Be aware of what’s around you and anticipate potential hazards
  4. Plan ahead – Leave plenty of time for your journey, plan your route and be prepared for unexpected delays.
  5. Drive at a safe speed – Adjust your speed to the prevailing conditions and drive smoothly.
  6. Stay calm – If you’re late, ring ahead to take the pressure off. Plan breaks if you’re tired.
